The Times has reported the findings of the Rights for Residents survey and again highlighted our campaign for those in health and care settings to have legal rights to receive visitors. The collective lobbying of MPs, the recent House of Commons debate and meetings with campaign groups has had a huge impact on Ministers.
The Minister for Care Helen Whately, finally announced on the front page of the Times that the government will legislate to give those in health and care settings legal rights to receive visitors:
“Care homes will be forced to allow visitors under plans being drawn up by the government … Primary legislation giving residents or patients a right to receive visitors is also being considered but this would take longer to get through Parliament”
Rights for Residents continue to campaign to ensure the voices of those affected are heard during the drafting of legislation. The devil will be in the detail, but this is a huge step in the right direction. This is something our members have lobbied tirelessly for and together with fellow campaign groups, we continue to be a strong and powerful force for change. We’re committed to maintaining pressure on Ministers via the media and those politicians that support our campaign.
As ever we have no choice but to raise funds in order to continue with our work. Unlike established charities we receive no external funding or employ fundraisers to support what we do. If your family have benefited from our campaign or will do in the future, please consider making a small donation.
